Cambodia is a hot, tropical country with a captivating culture and profound history. From the ancient temples of Angkor Wat to the energetic streets of Phnom Penh and the laid-back islands that lie just off the coast, while visiting you’ll experience a mix of urban life, sacred sites, and rural beauty. Preparing for a trip involves thinking carefully about what your packing for Cambodia will include.
Creating a Cambodia packing list is the best way to make sure your journey is both comfortable and respectful of local traditions. Understanding the dress code, climate, and travel essentials in this corner of Southeast Asia will help you pack with confidence. To make things easier, we’ve put together a handy guide to help you prepare for any trip:

Packing for Cambodia – Pre-Trip Planning
When packing for Cambodia, a little preparation goes a long way.
Checking the weather is key to choosing what to wear, as Cambodia has two distinct seasons:
- The dry season (roughly November to April). With hot, sunny days and lower humidity, this time of year is ideal for sightseeing, including visiting temples and exploring the big cities. This is why many Cambodia tours depart during the dry season.
- The rainy season (May to October). This time of year brings dramatic downpours that make the local greenery appear more lush than ever. While it can be quite hot, humid, and wet, it’s a good time to enjoy the natural scenic beauty.
Both seasons have their charms, but you’ll want to adjust your clothing and accessories accordingly so you can wear items that are suitable for the weather and the season.

Strategies for Packing for Cambodia
A well-organized bag makes all the difference when you’re unpacking in hotel rooms or hopping between cities. We recommend using packing cubes to keep your clothes and accessories tidy. This makes it easy to find what you want to wear without needing to unpack everything at once.
When it comes to what to bring with you, as Cambodia is a tropical country, the primary consideration is to stay cool while respecting local customs. Choose lightweight, breathable clothing made from natural fibers like cotton or linen. These are perfect for muggy nights and scorching days.
We always recommend packing a few essentials in addition to your clothing: a refillable water bottle with built-in filter, sun protection such as a broad-brimmed hat and high-SPF sunscreen, and plenty of insect repellent.
However, one of the most important packing tips is to consider what to wear in Cambodia when visiting temples and other sacred sites. Shoulders and knees should be covered for both men and women, so avoid tank tops and shorts. Instead, opt to wear a t-shirt and long trousers or a skirt. Be sure to dress conservatively, and steer clear of anything too revealing.

Dressing for Your Travel Itinerary
When choosing what clothes to wear in Cambodia, we advise packing loose-fitting clothes that let air circulate. Lightweight t-shirts, long skirts, and especially elephant pants are great choices. These loose pants are comfortable for travel days, temple visits, and lounging when you don’t want to wear anything too restrictive.
As well as several t-shirts and lightweight pants, consider bringing a couple of dressier outfits that are still on the conservative side if you’re planning to dine out at nice restaurants or attend evening events.
If you want to see as much of Cambodia as you can, you’ll likely be on your feet a lot of the time, exploring the country’s capital as well as its more rural areas and off-the-beaten-track attractions. This means that comfortable walking shoes are crucial. A pair of sturdy sandals—as well as a breathable pair of sneakers if you’re going ‘off road’—should cover almost all situations.
Finally, don’t forget accessories to help you stay cool: a good hat, sunglasses, and a lightweight scarf to cover up your head or any exposed areas of skin are indispensable in the tropical climate. Try a Cambodian krama; a patterned or checkered cotton scarf that keeps you cool and covered.

Beach and Island Trips
If you plan on beach days, such as a visit to Koh Rong, make sure to pack a swimsuit, lightweight towel, and plenty of sunscreen. A waterproof bag is good, too, as it protects valuables from sand and salt water.
Beaches in Cambodia vary: some are lively with bars and music, others are serene and secluded. Knowing what sort of beach experience you’re after can help you pack the right things. For example, if you want to go to a beach with snorkeling or kayaking opportunities, pack a mask or check out local places to rent equipment.
Outdoor Activities
From hiking in the countryside near Siem Reap to biking around Angkor Thom, Cambodia offers plenty of outdoor adventures. Pack accordingly with sun protection, comfortable shoes suitable for whatever activity you’re planning, and a water bottle. Take regular breaks to avoid heat exhaustion.
If you’re looking for some inspiration, we absolutely love a place close to Phnom Penh called Phnom Chisor. It offers hilltop temple ruins with panoramic views, and it’s a wonderful option for a morning hike.
Historical Sites
A highlight of any trip to Cambodia is the magnificent Angkor Wat, along with the surrounding sacred sites. The sheer scale and detail of the temples are awe-inspiring, and sunrise over Angkor is a must-see. Dress respectfully when visiting these sites, covering your shoulders and knees. You’ll also need to remove your shoes when entering certain areas, so wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off.

One of our favorites in Cambodia is the Bayon Temple with its smiling faces. The tree-wrapped ruins of Ta Prohm are equally unforgettable. Wherever you visit, you’re sure to be amazed by the culture and beauty.
Travel Essentials
There are certain things that are always on the Adventures with Sarah team packing lists; Sarah’s Box of Awesome, tissues, essential medications and a portable charger to name a few. Here are the essential items we also include when we’re packing for Cambodia:
Health and Hygiene
A well-packed wash bag will save you from scrambling to find supplies in unfamiliar stores. Make sure to include your preferred toiletries and medical supplies, such as band-aids and antiseptic wipes.
If you have prescription medicines, bring enough for your entire trip, plus a little extra in case you experience any delays with your return trip, along with copies of your prescriptions. You should also consult a doctor before leaving, as you may require some travel vaccinations.
Insect bites can be a serious problem in some of Cambodia’s more rural areas, so it’s a good idea to carry insect repellent and consider a lightweight, long-sleeve shirt and long pants for evenings.
It’s important to stay hydrated in hot, humid countries like Cambodia. However, be cautious about what you’re consuming. Drink only bottled water, as tap water can make some travelers feel unwell. Most hotels provide water daily, but it’s wise to carry some with you so you always have it available.

Safety and Security
Cambodia is generally very safe, and the people are remarkably warm and welcoming. But, like anywhere, it’s wise to remain aware of your belongings, particularly in markets and crowded areas. If traveling from the US, or via the US, we also recommend a TSA-approved lock for your luggage. Unlike standard luggage locks that typically come with the suitcase, these are specialized locks that can be opened by airport security as needed without being cut. This allows them to be reused if your bag needs to be inspected.
However, keeping yourself and your belongings safe isn’t just about protecting against theft. A dry bag is invaluable for protecting electronics from Cambodia’s dust and sudden showers, especially during the rainy season, on day trips to the islands, or when exploring the sandy beaches.
Day Bag Essentials
A day bag is a great option for carrying the essentials while exploring, such as bottled water, snacks, a map, and perhaps a lightweight guidebook. It’ll keep everything organized and handy, while still protecting against unexpected rain showers and stopping dust from getting into your electronics.
If you still have space after packing the essentials, we recommend a portable charger for your phone or camera, a small emergency kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, and sunglasses. A few wet wipes or tissues may also come in handy in public restrooms.

Final Checks
Before zipping up your bag, double-check your packing list against your travel plans. Have a look at the weather forecast one last time and adjust your layers if needed, or add a lightweight rain jacket.
Ensure you have your passport, tourist visa, and any required travel documents. It’s also a good idea to leave extra space in your luggage for souvenirs. It’s hard to resist those authentic Cambodian textiles, handmade ornaments from local artisans, and spices that elevate home cooking to the next level.
