Rural Life in Maramures Travel to the rural region of Maramures (meaning “country of the wood”). Marvel at the skilled craftsmanship of the towering wooden churches and elaborate carvings on gates and houses in all the small villages. Visit to Merry Cemetery, famous for its decorated wooden gravestones with colorful and humorous epitaphs.

Traditions of Maramures Visit with the village photographer who has been documenting the families and all the events there for the past 50 years. Visit a workshop where they make the unique style traditional hats of the region. Light hike to to shepherd village with cheese tasting there.

OVERNIGHT: BUCOVINA REGION
Painted monasteries Visit impressive wooden nunnery before heading to the Bucovina region over a scenic road in the Northern Carpathians. Visit one of the four ‘painted monasteries’ of this region, the Voroneț Monastery. These monasteries have their exterior walls adorned with traditional Orthodox frescoes painted in Byzantine style from the 16th century.

Steam train ride and folk artist Visit to the Modovita painted monastery before embarking on a steam train ride for a few hours around the bucolic Bucovina region with lunch included. Visit to artist who is renowned for her work making hand-painted and colourful Easter eggs.

OVERNIGHT: SIGHISOARA
Get medieval with Vlad The Impaler Travel from Bucovina into Transylvania. Check into hotel in Sighişoara, the only medieval citadel in the world that is still inhabited. Tour around its atmospheric walled old quarter including the 210 foot high Clock Tower, the Stag House and the Dracula house – the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler.

Transylvanian wines and fortified churches We start our day exploring a string of small Saxon towns with citadels and fortified churches such as Biertan and Richis, both UNESCO world heritage sites. Learn about the ‘marital prison’ which kept the divorce rate quite low here. Visit with a young winemaking couple for tasting and home cooked lunch.

Introduction to Saxon city of Brasov Explore the 13th century Rasnov fortress, which resisted Ottoman attacks. Visit Brasov, a well-preserved city with a rich history. Discover its role as a craft center for German Saxons from the 14th-18th centuries. Guided tour of the city’s Council Square, Black Church, Rope St, and Defense Walls for a complete experience.

Brasov at your leisure Full day at leisure in Brasov to explore, go to museum, hit the amazing jewellery stores or take the cable car up to Tâmpa mountain with its Hollywood-esque BRASOV sign.

Peles Castle and Romania’s Capital On the way to Bucharest we stop at in the town of Sinaia, nestled at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains. Visit to the stunning Peles Castle, a masterpiece of German new-Renaissance architecture built by King Charles I. Continue on to Bucharest, Romania’s capital. Walking tour followed by our farewell dinner.

Our Romania September 2025 tour ends after breakfast. Your guide will be on hand to help with transfers to the airport or wherever your adventures take you. Thank you and good-bye!
