ALBANIA &

MACEDONIA SPRING 2026

May 22 – June 4, 2026

$5450 Double / $5800 Single per person

Albania is where the Mediterranean meets the Balkans. A dramatic circus of mountains, traditions, people and colors that will delight any eye, mouth, spirit, body or lens that is curious and eager to explore. It’s a country packed between the worlds of the Greeks, the Romans, the Ottomans and the Slavs. A land where the sun and the hospitality rank among local Gods, a land of drama, a land of joy. It’s a land more for travelers than conventional tourists. North Macedonia could easily lay claim to be The Balkans as They Once Were. This former Yugoslav republic has many of its ex-Yugo neighbors looking at it with fondness for a more simpler, authentic version of the Balkan way of life. The majestic setting of Lake Ohrid, the ancient monasteries & cathedrals and the accessibility to rural and traditional villages and crafts make it special.

Both countries are at a crossroads of ancient cultures and faiths. Visible ruins, remains and imprints of Byzantine, Classical & Hellenistic Greek and Roman times can be found as well as felt here. A myriad of faiths and believers of Jewish, Orthodox, Catholic, Sunni and the Bektashi Order are found in all corners. Every day you can encounter either hill towns built entirely of stone, covered bazaars, archaeological sites, homemade rakija (schnapps), or traces of communist past (and sometimes all in one spot). This tour combines stunning natural beauty, home-cooked culinary delights and towns & cities covered in layers of history, legends and myths. The best thing is that mass tourism has yet to come to this corner of Europe. Guests can feel like they have many places all to themselves.

Day One

OVERNIGHT: Fishte, Albania

Transfer from Tirana airport, Kruje visit, discovery of Albanian food and dinner at Mrizi i Zanave. Head to the nearby dramatic town of Kruja, the capital of the Albanian resistance that helped spread the “revolt” of the Albanians against the Ottoman Empire. A light meal and then a visit of the Castle and the Adjacent Ottoman Bazaar. Continue north to find our final destination for this first evening in Albania at perhaps the finest example of farm-to-table in all of southeast Europe, Mrizi i Zanave restaurant and B&B.

Day Two

OVERNIGHT: Berat

After the glorious breakfast of the Mrizi i Zanave, we will head to the antique coastal city of Durres, once upon a time a “pay-toll” station to enter the famous Via Egnatia, an important Roman road connecting the eastern and western sides of the Roman Empire in the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Outdoor lunch at a farm. Tour of Durres before arriving in the hill town of Berat, known as 1001 windows. This place is a great gate for romantics, curious, adventurers. We will visit the 13th century citadel and then have dinner there with a magnificent view down to the town below.

Day Three

OVERNIGHT: Berat

Walking tour of Berat in the lower part of the town. Local style meal and then a bit of free time to relax or have a siesta (as the locals do). Time to try some local wines at a winery established soon after communism fell. Taste new varieties like Puls, Black Serina, White Debina alongside delicious olive oils and some of the local cheeses. After this warm-up, we’ll enjoy dinner here as well.

Day Four

OVERNIGHT: Qeparo

Head to the coast where both the beauty of the Adriatic and the Ionian are on display. The Otranto channel creates a natural connection between the mountains of Vlora and the shores of Puglia on the opposite side of the sea. Our friends in the Bay of Vlora will help us experience a traditional shepherd meal. We’ll cross the Pass of Ceasar at 1000 meters above sea level to witness eventually one of the iconic views of the Ionian sea and the Acroceraunian Mountains. Visit to the castle of Vasiliqia, which Albanian born rebel Ali Pasha built as a gift to his young beautiful wife. Overnight right on the beach in Qeparo’s small family owned Hotel Riviera.

Day Five

OVERNIGHT: Gjirokaster

We will continue our ride south to reach the most beautiful combination of nature and history, the Archaeological and Natural Park of Butrint, a UNESCO site. All sorts of ruins, plants, amphibians and birds make this place quite unique. Drive to nearby Ksamil for a great meal of sea fruit, locally farmed mussels and fruits. Stop for refreshing in the springs of the Blue Eye and and a quick visit of some Albanian Stalinist Bunkers before arriving into UNESCO protected Gjirokaster, the enchanting city of stone.

Day Six

OVERNIGHT: Gjirokaster

Gjirokaster is eventually the most unusual town in Albania (and maybe in the region). It is inhabited by fairies and witches, by towers and ruins, by pride and decadence, by geniuses and dictators (both Ismail Kadare the writer and Enver Hoxha the dictator were born in this town in the first part of the 20th century). We will explore the haunted routes that climb up the Wide Mountain, will visit the Castle and its former prison and Weapon Museum, will talk about the Chronicle in Stone, Pyrrus of Epirus, Ali Pasha of Tepelene, Lord Byron, Enver Hoxha and so many more. This is very fertile land for history and imagination. Dinner in one of the small tavernas where our ambition is to surprise you with local delicacies you might have not heard of.

Day Seven

OVERNIGHT: Korce

A long and enchanting road trip through the backroads of Albania. We’ll go from one valley to another, cross mountains and natural parks, visit small forgotten towns, see war monuments, witness the dramatic Pindus mountains and taste amazing food and hospitality in small family restaurants. After our road trip will end in the city of Korca, one of the romantic gateways of Southern Albania. It has developed into a reputation of dolce vita lifestyle, serenades, great food and lovely local beers.

Day Eight

OVERNIGHT: Ohrid

We will enter Macedonia near the St. Naum monastery, our first stop, the most famous monastery in Macedonia, built in the 9th century. Our local guide will wait for you there and he will guide you to the monastery and the surroundings. After finishing the tour, small boats will wait for us at the port of Saint Naum monastery. We will enjoy a boat ride with amazing views and perfect clear water from the oldest and clearest lake in Europe, Ohrid Lake. We will stop in a small fishing village where we will have grilled trout for lunch together with traditional garlic paste called “makalo” famous for the Ohrid region. After lunch we will sail to Bay of Bones, a palafitte settlement on water where we will discover how prehistoric people lived on the shores of Ohrid Lake. After exploring the lake we will reach Ohrid and we will be accommodated in the hotel. Free evening in the center of Ohrid.

Day Nine

OVERNIGHT: Ohrid

We start the tour from the central square “St. Clement of Ohrid”. Strolling through the narrow streets of the old town, the first stop we make is in front of the Cathedral church St. Sophia. Then we walk to the next stop – the Ancient Theatre from the 1st century BC. Exploring other local sites on the way, we will visit the church St. Holly Mother of God, Peribleptos, with unique frescoes from the 13th century. We will also visit the Samoil Fortress. The last site we visit today is another 13th-century church of St. John the Evangelist (Kaneo). Going back to the center by small boats. At the end we will visit workshops for Ohrid pearls and Macedonian ruby, where we will learn more about this unique gems of Macedonia. Free time in the center.

Day Ten

OVERNIGHT: Bitola

After breakfast we’ll drive to the traditional Macedonian village Kuratica, 30 min from Ohrid. Here you will experience the traditional way of life and you will learn more about the local customs. First, we will have a donkey ride (each donkey has his or her own escort), through the beautiful mountains and nature that surrounds the village. After the donkey ride, we will have a traditional lunch, prepared just for us in one of the houses in the village. We will taste traditional Macedonian food and drinks, all homemade following traditional recipes and using homemade ingredients. After lunch we drive to Dihovo village where we will learn more about making honey in Macedonia and taste Macedonian honey. Drive to the city of Bitola, accommodation in the hotel and dinner in the center.

Day Eleven

OVERNIGHT: Bitola

After breakfast we will have a city tour in Bitola. We will walk on the biggest pedestrian street, Sirok Sokak and learn about the history of the most important city in the Balkans in the 19th century. The next site is Heraclea Lyncestis, 2.5 km south of Bitola. Heraclea was a strategically important town during the Hellenistic period, and it was founded by King Philip of Macedon (the father of Alexander the Great). In the afternoon we will drive to Dihovo village where we will have cooking classes with a traditional Macedonian family. We will learn some of the recipes from traditional Macedonian cuisine and at the end we will have dinner.

Day Twelve

OVERNIGHT: Skopje

MEET YOUR GUIDE: Andrew Villone

Twenty-five years ago, Andrew got bit hard by the travel bug when he took his first trip abroad, backpacking around Europe for 6 months. Eventually, he took the big plunge and in 2014 he moved to Slovenia, the charming Alpine/Balkan/Mediterranean country where east meets west.

Andrew has been leading & organizing tours for the past 20 years. He loves to champion countries and regions that many travelers have yet to explore. His three favorite aspects of traveling are sampling the local cuisine and wine, sharing travel escapades with other travelers and hanging out with the locals.

I have been visiting friends and showing them my photos from the Piemonte tour. I was telling them how great it was to become immersed in this area and see things you would not normally have the opportunity to do or know about. Having a caring and inquisitive guide who delights in sharing where she lives brings so much to the experience. Go visit Piemonte with Lisa- you will have such an amazing time and fond memories to share and relish!

I have had the joy of traveling with Adventures with Sarah many times, from Thailand, to Turkey, and many places in between. I choose to book with AWS because I can rely on a tour that is paced well, varied in activities, with great food and even greater guides. As a frequent traveler to Europe, I really enjoy AWS tours due to a small group size and the opportunity to go in depth into a region and really experience the culture of the area I’m visiting. And every time, with every group, I meet fellow travelers who are now friends. Adventures with Sarah is a tour company that I would recommend without hesitation. In fact, I have 3 tours booked for this year!

Fantastic look at more "out of the way" spots and wonderful experiences of food and wine. No crowds, just the Sicilian countryside and lovely towns. Traveling in April was fantastic with all the wildflowers. And walking on Mama Etna's shoulders was a highlight!

Barbara B.Sicily Pleasures tour

It really was a wonderful trip. This was our first group trip, and the size was just right. We all got along well which was a bonus. Everything was smooth, and Sarah had picked out some really wonderful things for us to do. I felt like we were getting "sneak peeks" of special things regular tourists don't get to do. We were willing participants for her to try out new things on this trip. The hotels were lovely, and the wine lunches perfect! There was a good balance of planned activities and free time which I appreciated. I will definitely be looking for more trips to go on with Adventures with Sarah!

Leslie P.Sicily Pleasures tour

Good accommodations in the heart of all important areas. Food experience was excellent with incentive to try new foods. Sarah is very personable and has each tour member's concerns and needs in mind. Love the small groups.

Jen R.Dalmatian Staycation tour

My husband and I had a great time touring Dalmatia with Sarah and the local guides that joined us. A favorite activity was sailing on a traditional sail boat from the island of Vis. Lovely group of travelers and many memories made!

Food and wine blitz in beautiful areas of Slovenia and Croatia. You will appreciate it most if you are a true wine lover. Meetings with young enthusiastic, creative winemakers were the highlight.

What a perfect way to get back into European travel. It was obvious from the start that Trish had put her heart and soul into the planning of the Hidden Paris tour. It was a great mix of adventures and I throughly enjoyed my travel group, who became like family, and it was obvious to see why most had traveled with adventures with Sarah before, Our local guide, Julian, was excellent and it was fun finally getting to also meet Sarah and sons. Merci beaucoup, Trish for this great time and I hope to travel with you again in the future.

Leslie A.Paris Staycation tour

A thoroughly enjoyable trip. George, our leader, was super-knowledgeable, helpful, energetic, and fun. His knowledge of people and places gave us experiences we couldn't have duplicated on our own. The itinerary was great - I thought the pace was good and we had a variety of experiences. The only thing I didn't like was that the weather in late April was rather chilly and often wet, more so than I expected. However, traveling later in the spring would have meant missing Orthodox Easter, which was the highlight of the trip for me. We spent it in a rural village, and participating in the villagers' traditions was a rare privilege that I'll never forget. So take an umbrella and some warm clothes and prepare for a special experience. Maybe you'll get the sunshine that we mostly didn't get!

Melissa M.Romania tour

Our guide Susanna was both professional and thoughtful. She cared for our health and happiness! I had some health issues and was treated with kindness and help! Our accommodations were both comfortable and clean. The bus driver was fearless and professional. I will travel with Susanna again!

Melva O.Sicily Pleasures tour

This was a wonderful trip! Susanna was such a wonderful tour guide, thoughtful, funny, informative. I can’t imagine a better guide for this trip! Our accommodations were wonderful as were all the varied activities and dining experiences. I enjoyed the other travelers in our group and felt as if we were family. I have made new friends that I will keep in touch with. Thank you!

Anne B.Sicily Pleasures tour

We had a wonderful tour with our guide Susanna and fellow travelers. The tour was well planned out touching on most all the main destinations in Sicily. Susanna was super well organized, kind and considerate and a lot of fun to travel with. She was a great communicator before, during and after the tour and was helpful with day to day needs like finding laundry service, restaurants and transport to the airport. The local guides, meals, accommodations, etc were all top notch. We had a great small group of 7 travelers that all got on very well. The spacious van we used for traveling was very comfortable and the driver Giuseppe was highly skilled at driving the chaotic streets in Sicily’s cities and towns. We highly recommend booking a tour with Adventures with Sarah and especially with Susanna Perrucchini!!

Randal D.Sicily Highlights tour

In short, we will travel with AWS again and would highly recommend them! Oh!! We also felt that we received far more in value and experience than the price for the tour.
