Merhaba from Morocco for the latest Morocco tour diary.
We’ve kicked off this year’s Imprint Tours Morocco tour in Rabat. It’s a busy day here, it’s Eid which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The city was bustling today, everyone was out in pretty new clothes, which is part of the holiday tradition. I’m joined again by my Moroccan sister Mouna and we are excited about another adventure in this surprising and beautiful country. Come along every day for the next two weeks for some Moroccan exploration. Yalla!

Morocco Tour diary Day 2
We headed north today and stopped in the beach town of Asilah for lunch. The town is known for street art, which changes every year. It’s also a very popular spot for surfing, and while you may be surprised that Moroccans surf, it makes sense as they have both Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea coasts.

Morocco may not seem like a “bucket list” destination. After all, they have no major museums like Paris, and no famous ruins or ancient landmarks. So what makes it such a compelling place for visitors? For me, it’s the visuals. Moroccan cities are beautiful. The simplicity of the architecture makes for great photos, as do the colors. It’s not just buildings that get colorful here, it’s also the local style of dress. Both women and men wear jalabas, long sleeved cloaks in bright colors and patterns.

Artists and designers have been inspired for decades by Moroccan style, making it a playground for photography enthusiasts.

Blue Monday
We are in Chefchaouen, in northern Morocco. We took a stroll this morning to explore the town, but really it’s all about the photo safari. The town is painted blue to keep cool and to ward off mosquitoes, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s also to attract travelers.
We ran into a man painting steps blue today, which was fun to watch. They use pigments rather than latex paints we use in the US.

Yesterday was insanely crowded for the Eid holiday, but this morning was back to normal, and we enjoyed Mouna’s tour in the cool morning. We’d better enjoy the cool—tomorrow will be over 100 in Fez!

This place always makes me want to go home and paint my house in many shades of periwinkle, but I’m sure it would look insane outside of Morocco

The Wi-Fi isn’t so great in the Sahara, on the border of Algeria, so here’s a taste of our day.

At sunset last night, we took a long camel ride into the dunes of the Sahara. We after watching the sun set, we rode the camels further to our desert camp. Our tents were comfortable rooms with bathrooms, and after dinner, the staff played drums around a fire.

The best part? Our camels stuck around all night so that the early risers could go out for another ride. They got to see the sunrise, and enjoy the morning calm with their dromedaries.

Yesterday we crossed the Atlas Mountains to arrive in Marrakech. This is always the big payoff on the Morocco tour, as Marrakech is just plain fun.

We started our visit with a tour of the Majorelle Gardens, painted in beautiful rich colors with coordinated plantings. I ran off to do a little shopping in the sprawling Medina. It is a shoppers paradise, and it made quick work of whatever money I had on hand.
After the shopping blitz, I headed to the hammam and had the Sahara (along with about 7 layers of skin) scrubbed off of me.

Smelling like a rose, I enjoyed a fabulous dinner with some of my guests. Marrakech has a very interesting restaurant scene, so I always try something new.
There is nothing in this world like Marrakech. While three days is a start, it is never enough.
